The High (emotional) Cost of Hearing Loss

I started seeing the emotions, discomfort and frustration when I was a kid. My dad served in the Army in World War II, which continued the damage to his hearing that started when he drove a one cylinder John Deere Tractor (with no muffler) as a teenager.

I remember my mom and dad getting into arguments. He would say “why do you always mumble so much? Why can’t you speak more clearly?” And of course, she would say “you just don’t pay attention to me anymore”.

Through the years, I’ve seen it in reoccur in the lives of thousands of people. I’ve seen intelligent, lovely people depressed, lonely, and hurt, not fully aware that the major cause of their suffering was rooted in their hearing loss. Maybe you can relate to what I’ve seen. Maybe you see it in someone you’re close to, or even in yourself.

The Psychological Pain of Hearing Loss

Hearing loss is more than just an annoyance and a frustration, because it effects one of our most valuable gifts, the way we communicate and build loving relationships. Most hearing problems develop gradually, so that you don’t realize the effects it’s having on your quality of life. The people closest to you may not realize your frustration, your bad mood, or your hurt feelings are created from hearing loss increasing your stress level. It effects work and family relationships. It may cause withdrawal from activities you once loved, and even contribute to depression, loneliness, and anger.

Why don’t people get help?

There are two major reasons people avoid hearing aids. One of the difficulties that my father had was simply that he couldn’t afford them at the time.

And then there are the stories that people hear from their friends and others who weren’t happy with the results they got from hearing aids.

I decided any program I offered had to solve both those problems: Bring the cost of hearing aids into an affordable range for most people, and provide a no fault, low risk guarantee of satisfaction.

How the “Hearing for Life” program began:

My name is Bob Bare, and I’m the owner of Hearing Haven, an audiology and hearing aid clinic on the North side of Dallas, Texas. We’ve been able to help thousands of people hear better and improve their lives, but I have also been frustrated.

That leaves a large group of people who really needed hearing help, but cannot afford it. There are people who still work, retirees living in their own home, or those in assisted living homes that pay their own way, but must live within their means. Hard workers like my father that need help, yet don’t have the ability to invest large sums of money to get help, and do not want to go in debt.

Inspiration Comes!

For months the dilemma plagued me. We were able to help clients that could afford to pay upfront for hearing aids, and those on Medicaid (in Texas), but that left the majority of people that needed help in the middle, unable to afford it!

The “inspiration” came to me in an unlikely place, while I was showering! The concept for the “Hearing for Life” concept came as a complete plan, including not only the monthly amount to make hearing aids affordable, but also the concept of how to provide new hearing instruments every few years as part of the program.

I decided this was too helpful to limit to Texas, so we formed New Perceptions in Hearing Inc to make it available nationwide.
